International Youth Day takes place on 12th August 2014 and is designated by the United Nations as a day to celebrate the role of young men and women in society across the world.
Here in the UK, the contribution of youth is an important topic. Youth unemployment hit the headlines back in 2011 when it passed over 1 million and there was talk of a ‘lost generation’. Since then youth unemployment has dropped, but there are still enthusiastic, keen young men and women out there who are looking to make a positive contribution to society.
Could your business help? Traineeships and Apprenticeships are schemes supported by the government and designed not just for large businesses but for small to medium sized businesses too, with specialist teams on hand to support you. From work experience placements and ‘mock’ interviews, through to four year apprenticeship programmes, there are many ways to get involved and help shape the work force of the future as well as benefit your business. If you decide to take on an apprentice there is even financial support available from the government, if you meet the necessary criteria.
Young people can offer a different perspective. As ‘digital natives’ they have grown up a social media, Wi-Fi world which presents both opportunities and challenges. Particularly if you are looking to market your products or services to this audience then working with young people could be the right step for your business.
