Link building was once an important part of SEO of the past and there was a time when any link to your website was worth having. However, as the Google algorithms have changed over the years so have link building requirements. The key now is to have useful, credible links from influential websites and poor quality links may actually be harming your Google rankings.
Once the Google algorithms started to change there was a flurry of activity - trying to remove as many poor quality links to websites as possible. Free and paid for tools were launched to allow you to neatly view or download the existing links to your site, contact the webmasters to ask them to remove poor quality links and then resubmit your site to Google.
The good news is that with the latest Google algorithm changes and updates Google now state that “In most cases, Google can assess which links to trust without additional guidance, so most normal or typical sites will not need to use (the disavow backlinks) tool.” However, if you are still concerned about backlinks affecting your Google search results then there is a simple two-step process to disavow them made clear in the Google Help Centre. Simply visit www.google.com/webmasters/tools/disavow-links-main, create or log into your Google Account and follow the instructions.
