Backlinks were once seen as an integral part of any SEO campaign. The more backlinks you had, the more influential your website was seen to be. Of course, the world of SEO has changed and the quantity of backlinks you now have for your website may not be as important as it once was. However the quality of those backlinks is still a factor worth considering.
You may not even be aware of what backlinks you have so thankfully there are some useful tools you can use to check them out. Websites such as Opensite Explorer (www.opensiteexplorer.org) or Google Webmaster Tools allow you to check your backlinks and in some cases compare them to your competitors. You can access basic information for free, or upgrade to access more detailed reports. Obviously backlinks from pages with high authority and trust ratings are good. If you already have these then great! If not, you may wish to consider guest blogging and other methods to increase your links from high ranking websites. You may also need to consider trying to remove links from low ranking sites, in case they are having a negative effect on your Google rankings.
