Mind Your Back - It's Back Awareness Week!

This week is Backcare Awareness Week and the aim of the week-long event, organised by the charity for healthier backs BackCare, is to raise awareness of the problems back pain can cause, as well as awareness of prevention and treatments. 

Many of our clients (as well as our team of Virtual Assistants) spend a lot of time sat at their desks and we know just how important looking after your back is.  Especially if you work from home, ensuring you work comfortably and without pain is vital for your productivity. 

Here are some top tips from one of our clients Healthy Home Office for looking after your back whilst you work: 

  1. Establish the all-important workstation Sitting at the kitchen table is fine for dinnertime, but it may not be best suited for work time.  A proper office desk and chair can ensure you mentally keep home and work separate, as well as ensure you have the physical support you need.   

  1. Make sure your furniture is ergonomically suited to your work style. Too much sitting plays havoc with our joints, muscles and posture.  Physical discomfort should not become a problem so if it does you need to think about changing your furniture.  There are so many different options and just a simple change to your chair or desk can make a huge difference to your comfort and efficiency. 

  1. Take breaks. Recommendations are: ten seconds every four minutes; and ten minutes every hour. Keep hydrated by making some of those breaks towards your kettle or fridge, or take a walk for 10 minutes to soak up some sunshine and breathe in some fresh air, helping you to return to your desk refreshed and ready to go. 

  1. Stand up.  Sitting all day can lead to slouching, back trouble, weak stomach muscles, leg and ankle stiffness and a variety of posture-related problems.  Studies have shown that too much sitting can even raise blood sugar levels, which increases the risk of Type 2 Diabetes.  So stand up, stretch and give yourself and your body a break from your desk when you can.
