What is an XML Sitemap?

An XML sitemap lists the pages of your website along with other information to ensure that search engines are aware of all of the content on your site.  They are particularly useful for websites that use Flash and other technology that search engines do not normally process.  Sitemaps can be submitted to Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engines to help them crawl your website more effectively, enabling you to appear in search results.

XML site maps can be created by your website developer or there are free online tools that can do it for you. At www.xml-sitemaps.com simply type in your full website URL, press start, download the resulting sitemap file and add it through your Google Webmaster account.  There are also xml site map plugins available for widely used web development platforms such as Wordpress.

Google says “We use the data in your Sitemap to learn about your site's structure, which will allow us to improve our crawler schedule and do a better job crawling your site in the future.  In most cases, webmasters will benefit from Sitemap submission, and in no case will you be penalized for it.”

Our Website VAs Julie & Dee can assist with creating your XML site map and any of your other website needs.  Please give us a call on 01483 332220 or email us at office@getaheadva.com to find out how we can help.
