What’s your favourite colour? It’s a question you might have asked each other as children but it actually has significance when it comes to business too. The colours you pick to reflect your company can make a big difference to your success (or failure).
When you consider branding and the colours involved you need to meet the needs of a number of different audiences. For example, within your industry there may be accepted norms – are primary colours always used or is it a more pastel effect? Sometimes going against the norms can cause positive disruption with your customers – and in other situations it can be a complete disaster.
When selecting colours you need to think about your audience as individuals, as well as your industry. If you pick overly feminine colours for your branding (such as pink or purple), will it put male buyers off from considering your services? Black and white branding may be simple, effective and bold (as well as cheaper to implement) but will it be overly masculine for your female customers?
Any colour you choose for your branding must be suitable for your customers – but it also has to reflect you and your business. It doesn’t make sense to pretend to be something you are not. Why use colours that might appeal to a younger audience if you don’t actually have the means to deliver the products or services they expect, thereby letting your customers down? The colours you choose should honestly reflect who you are – as well as who you are trying to appeal to.
Finally, you need to think about the practicality of any colours you choose. That shimmering gold might look beautiful, but can it really be reproduced on business cards, exhibition signage and even mugs – and can you afford it? It can be more effective to keep colours in your branding simpler and use advertisements, brochures, websites and other marketing materials to embellish those colours into a beautiful piece of design and communication.
