9 days of developing you

This month we’re delighted to be celebrating Get Ahead VA’s 9th birthday, and we couldn’t be prouder of everything our Regional Directors and Virtual Assistants have achieved over the years.

We also understand that big achievements come out of small actions, so we’ve put together a list of 9 things you can do over 9 days to develop yourself – your motivation, productivity or general well-being. Each of these should take no more than half an hour, but you might be surprised by what a big difference they make.

Day 1: Tidy up

There’s truth to the phrase ‘tidy house, tidy mind’, so find a mess that has been bothering you – your kitchen cupboards or your desk drawers – and organise it in a way that works for you. You’ll be surprised by how much more you get done when you stop trying to work around clutter.

Day 2: Write a list

If you feel overwhelmed by everything you have to do, write one big list. It could be on paper or online, colour coded or divided up according to priority – whatever works for you. Just get it all down in one place and suddenly it will all start to seem more manageable.

Day 3: Do a task you’ve been avoiding

We all have that one thing on our to-do list that we just keep putting off. Today is the day – get that pesky task done first thing in the morning and see what it feels like to finally have that weight off your mind.

Day 4: Ask for help

If there’s something you’ve been wanting to do that feels out of reach, or you’re simply overwhelmed with your workload, ask someone for help. You don’t have to surrender all control – what’s important is that you reach out and stop trying to struggle through alone.

Day 5: Eat a new lunch

It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with food, but it’s also really easy to shake up what you eat. If you have time, follow a recipe you’ve never tried before; if you’re buying lunch or eating out, choose something you would never normally go for. You might just find your new favourite food!

Day 6: List your achievements

Many of us spend our time looking forward and don’t take the time to look back. Break that habit today – write a list of everything you’ve achieved this year, however small, and then read it back. Can you see now how far you’ve come?

Day 7: Arrange something exciting

It’s great to have something to look forward to, so turn that ‘wouldn’t it be nice?’ idea into a concrete plan. Whether it’s coffee with a friend, an evening out with your partner or a conference you’ve always wanted to be go to, put one thing in your diary today that you’re excited for.

Day 8: Do some exercise

Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous – just the act of getting outside and being active, whatever that means for you, can have numerous physical and mental health benefits. And it’s even better if you can find a form of exercise you enjoy!

Day 9: Rest

We can’t be proactive all the time, so today take some time for yourself and rest. You might like to meditate, take a hot bath or simply veg out in front of your favourite TV programme – just make sure you do something that relaxes you, free from distractions.
