Meet the franchisee: Carrie
Last year at Get Ahead VA we launched our franchising option to allow other people to start their own flexible businesses. We welcomed Carrie Jones as our first franchisee, looking after the Reading, Basingstoke and Newbury area. It is now over half a year since Carrie started her business. Here we catch up with her to see how the first six months have gone:
Name: Carrie Jones
Area of expertise: Marketing & Branding
Q: Starting a new business is a big challenge! What have been your highlights so far?
Making new contacts and getting to know other businesses in my area has been a real highlight. There are so many small businesses out there and it has been interesting to meet so many different people. I love hearing about their journeys in business so far and talking about how my team might be able to help them.
Q: What have been the biggest hurdles/barriers to overcome?
The biggest challenge has been juggling the various processes and tasks that are involved in setting up a business. There is so much to learn! I am lucky to have had the support of Rebecca and the Get Ahead VA brand behind me. It’s taken a few months to get up to speed but I now feel that I have everything in place to focus on growing the business.
Q: What have you learnt?
I have learnt to plan, plan and plan… I knew this already but running my own business has really shown me how important it is to ensure that all the correct processes are in place….and of course, have fun!! That’s why I wanted to have my own business in the first place.
Q: What are your plans of the next 6 months?
The next 6 months for me are all about growth. I have made some really valuable connections both in the business sense and people that I can have a coffee with. I want to continue to grow my network and work with some fantastic businesses across the region.
Q: Do you have any advice for anyone thinking about starting their own franchise?
Do it! It’s a fantastic opportunity to start a business. If running your own business isn’t something you’ve done before then it’s a great way to have support and advice but still feel like you are independent. As Rebecca says, it is going into business for yourself, but not by yourself. I feel empowered to make my own decisions and to make my own business work – but also enjoy being part of the wider Get Ahead VA team around me.
