Here’s 60 seconds with our South Yorkshire Regional Director, Jo Munroe

When and why did you join Get Ahead VA? After 12 years working in human resources, I felt I needed more of a challenge. I also have three boys of very different ages: one, five and nine. Coordinating them all is difficult, and as much as a job can be flexible, it’s very rarely fully flexible, which, with three children to manage, I really needed. I started looking for a business opportunity about three months ago, and came across Get Ahead VA. As opposed to all the other franchises I had looked at, Get Ahead VA played to all my strengths and also felt like a perfect fit for me. After speaking with Rebecca and Fiona, I was even more convinced and excited to join. You can feel they are passionate about the business, which is really important for me.
What did you do before you joined Get Ahead VA? I have worked for 12 years in recruitment and human resources for other businesses. I originally worked in Construction Temps, where I managed over 250 temporary workers on construction sites. I then moved to Manchester, where I began as a business services manager within a recruiting business, managing all compliance for the business for ISO and health and safety. Then I moved back to South Yorkshire, where I began working as a HR advisor. I have worked in HR ever since, mainly working on start-ups, so companies who do not currently have HR.
Career highlight to date: I think HR can often be seen as an admin function. However, the main highlight for me so far was when I helped an individual while in employment with one company. The individual was really struggling with mental health and although he had reached out for help a number of times, he was lost in the system. He turned up for work one day and said he no longer wanted to live. I spoke to him for some time and called 111. The initial responses were not very helpful and left us feeling like no one would help, but I pushed on with him and got him to see a specialist. After three weeks off, attending meetings, recovering and having regular catch-ups with me, he was back in work, more positive than ever. Sometimes it just takes someone to care enough to care. He is now happy with his perfect little family.
Plans for the future: To help other businesses grow. Most of my career has been helping businesses to grow effectively. There is so much more to do. Planning and organising headcount comes as part of a HR package. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to offer all your headcount solutions, while still keeping in your budgets?
