What does it take to be a great entrepreneur?

Get Ahead VANewsWhat does it take to be a great entrepreneur?

This week is Global Entrepreneurship Week and 35,000 different events are planned across 125 countries to celebrate entrepreneurship.  The worldwide event will highlight the significant contribution that entrepreneurs make to our world as well as challenge and inspire future entrepreneurs.  Entrepreneurs can be a force for change and can actually make the world a better place.  They represent hope for the future.

Here at Get Ahead VA we are proud to support a variety of dedicated and inspiring entrepreneurs.  We help them by taking on the tasks they don’t have time to do, don’t have the skills to do, or simply don’t want to do.  We enable them to get back to what they do best – running their businesses.

As part of the Global Entrepreneurship Week celebrations we talked to three of those successful business owners about what they think it takes to be a great entrepreneur:

Get Ahead VA client Martha Silcott decided to leave her job as an Account Manager in the city to tackle an issue that no one wants to talk about – the easy and discreet disposal of tampons and sanitary items.  Martha says:FabLittleBag® is the end result of many, many years of trying to get a newly designed product in a taboo area to market.  Passion and tenacity are two key ingredients to making things happen.  Surrounding yourself with positive people helps a lot too.  I have always been curious about how and why things are a certain way and if they can work in a better way.  Finding solutions is the super fun bit – getting them to market requires a host of other skills and is fraught with other challenges!”

Another of our clients Beverlie Wilkinson set up Nuggets of Learning, a learning and development consultancy over ten years ago.  She says: “As a business coach I work with a number of successful entrepreneurs, as well as being one myself.  Though there are some similarities, from a psychometric point of view they don’t all follow the same personality style.  You don’t have to be an ISTJ (Myers Briggs Type Indicator) or a ‘Red (Strength Deployment Industry) to be a successful entrepreneur.  However having some of those qualities definitely helps.  You need to be a self-starter, who trusts their own instincts more than what others might tell them.  You need to have that self-belief that you can do it, even when there are obstacles in the way.”

Our very own founder Rebecca Newenham started Get Ahead VA when she was looking for a flexible employment solution that could work around her family.  Rebecca says: “I always knew I wanted to follow in my mother’s footsteps and run my own business.  Entrepreneurship is definitely an attitude that can run in families.  I knew running my own business would give me the flexibility that I was looking for.  I think great entrepreneurs have that certain confidence to just get out there and try.  They have that resilience to cope with setbacks and not be put off.  They have a determination to make things happen.”
